Drug addiction

Post by Hephzibah22 »

Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a chronic condition where a person compulsively uses a substance despite harmful consequences. It is a health problem, not simply a lack of willpower.
Causes and risk factors
Peer pressure and curiosity
Stress, unemployment, or hopelessness
Family history or a home where drug use is common
Mental health problems such as depression or anxiety
Easy access to substances like alcohol, tramadol, cannabis, codeine cough syrups, and other drugs
Warning signs
Changes in behaviour, mood, or friends
Dropping grades or work performance
Secrecy, lying, or stealing money
Neglecting hygiene and responsibilities
Needing more of the drug to feel the same effect, and feeling sick without it
Effects
Health: Organ damage, infections, mental illness, overdose, and death
Social: Broken relationships, stigma, and isolation
Economic: Lost jobs, debt, and wasted potential
Legal: Arrest and imprisonment
Prevention and recovery
Educate young people early about the risks.
Keep busy with skills, sports, faith, and productive goals.
Choose friends carefully and learn to say no.
Treat addiction as an illness: detox, counselling, and rehabilitation work best with medical supervision, since sudden withdrawal can be dangerous.
Offer support without judgement, because shame often keeps people from seeking help.
In Nigeria, the NDLEA offers counselling and rehabilitation support, and psychiatric hospitals also treat addiction.
