Is it better to focus on one product or sell a bit of everything?

Post by Alvana »

When you're starting out, there's a strong temptation to offer as much as possible. More products means more chances that something sells, right? Plus, if a customer asks for something you don't have, it feels like a lost sale. So many new sellers end up with a little bit of everything.

But there's a strong case for the opposite approach. Focusing on one product, or one type of product, makes it easier to become known for something. Customers remember "the person who sells the best shea butter" more easily than "the person who sells a bit of everything." Marketing is simpler, because you're telling one clear story. Managing stock is easier, so there's less money tied up in items that sit on the shelf. And you can get really good at sourcing, pricing, and serving that one thing.

Still, the "a bit of everything" model has its place. Variety can bring in more customers, increase how much each person buys, and protect you if one product suddenly stops selling. Some businesses, like general stores and marketplaces, are built entirely on it.

The real challenge is that spreading yourself thin can mean doing a lot of things at an average level. On the other hand, depending on a single product can be risky if demand drops or a competitor undercuts you.

Maybe the answer depends on the stage of the business. Some people start narrow and expand later. Others start wide, see what sells, and then cut back to the winners.

What has your experience been?

• Did you start with one product or many? Would you do it the same way again?
• Have you ever dropped a product line and seen sales improve?
• Is there a point where adding more products makes sense?
• Which type of business works better with variety, and which needs focus?

Share what worked and what didn't.
