SOCIAL MEDIA AND GEN Z

Post by Ekags »

Theme: The Influence of Social Media on Generation Z

Main Bible Verse: Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

1. Introduction

Who is Gen Z?

Generation Z, commonly called Gen Z, refers to people born approximately between 1997 and 2012. They have grown up in a world where smartphones, the internet, and social media are part of everyday life.

Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and YouTube influence how Gen Z communicates, learns, dresses, thinks, and relates to others.

Social media is not entirely good or bad. Its impact depends on how we use it. It can be a tool for education, business, communication, and spreading the Gospel, but it can also expose young people to harmful content, peer pressure, and unhealthy comparisons.

2. Five Ways Social Media Influences Gen Z

A. Social Media and Communication

Social media allows young people to communicate with friends, family, and people around the world.

Benefits:

* Connecting with people across the world.
* Sharing ideas and knowledge.
* Building relationships and communities.

Challenges:

* Spending less quality time with family.
* Preferring online conversations to face-to-face communication.
* Experiencing cyberbullying.

Bible verse: Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Lesson: Use social media to encourage people rather than insult, bully, or destroy their reputations.

B. Social Media and Mental Health

Social media can affect how young people feel about themselves.

Some young people compare their appearance, relationships, possessions, and achievements with what they see online.

This may lead to feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, anxiety, or low self-esteem.

Bible verse: Galatians 6:4
“But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”

Lesson: Do not measure your worth by likes, followers, comments, or the lifestyles people display online.

Remember: What you see on social media is often only a small part of someone’s life, not the whole story.

C. Social Media and Education

Social media can help Gen Z acquire knowledge and develop useful skills.

Benefits:

* Learning new skills.
* Accessing educational materials.
* Discovering business opportunities.
* Developing creativity and communication skills.

However, excessive use can distract students from studying and completing important tasks.

Bible verse: Proverbs 18:15
“The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.”

Lesson: Use social media to increase your knowledge rather than waste all your valuable time.

D. Social Media and Morality

Social media exposes young people to different lifestyles, opinions, trends, and values.

Some trends may encourage positive behaviour, while others may promote dishonesty, sexual exploitation, violence, or other harmful actions.

Bible verse: 1 Corinthians 15:33
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

Lesson: Do not follow every trend simply because it is popular. Examine what you watch, share, and practise.

As Christians, we should ask ourselves:

* Does this content honour God?
* Will it influence me positively or negatively?
* Would I be comfortable if my parents, pastor, or teachers saw what I post?
* Does it encourage me to become a better person?

E. Social Media and Business

Social media provides opportunities for Gen Z to become entrepreneurs.

Young people can use social media to:

* Advertise their products and services.
* Promote small businesses.
* Find customers.
* Build professional networks.
* Develop digital skills.

Bible verse: Proverbs 22:29
“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”

Lesson: Instead of using social media only for entertainment, use it to develop your talents, create opportunities, and build a better future.

3. Five Dangers of Social Media for Gen Z

1. Addiction: Spending excessive time online and neglecting responsibilities.
2. Peer pressure: Doing things against your values to gain acceptance.
3. Cyberbullying: Using the internet to threaten, embarrass, or harass others.
4. False identity: Pretending to live a life that does not reflect reality.
5. Moral corruption: Being influenced by harmful content and unhealthy relationships.

Bible verse: Romans 12:2

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

This verse encourages young people to think carefully about the influences they accept rather than blindly following the crowd.

4. How Can Gen Z Use Social Media Wisely?

Here are seven practical steps:

1. Set time limits: Avoid allowing social media to control your daily routine.
2. Protect your privacy: Do not share passwords, private information, or sensitive personal details.
3. Choose your content carefully: Follow accounts that educate, inspire, and encourage you.
4. Avoid unhealthy comparisons: Recognise that everyone’s journey is different.
5. Think before posting: Remember that online actions can have lasting consequences.
6. Make time for God and family: Do not allow social media to replace prayer, Bible study, or meaningful relationships.
7. Use your influence positively: Share helpful information, encourage others, and spread messages of hope.

Bible verse: Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

5. Discussion Questions for Gen Z

These questions can be used for a church youth meeting, school discussion, seminar, or youth conference.

1. How many hours do you spend on social media each day?
2. Is social media bringing you closer to your goals or distracting you from them?
3. Why do some young people measure their value by likes and followers?
4. How can social media influence a young person’s faith?
5. What should you do if someone bullies you online?
6. Can social media help young people discover their God-given talents?
7. How can Christians use social media to spread the Gospel?
8. If social media disappeared tomorrow, what positive skills or relationships would remain in your life?

6. Conclusion: Control Social Media Before It Controls You

Social media is a powerful tool, but it should not become the master of your life.

Gen Z has the opportunity to use technology to learn, build businesses, develop talents, strengthen relationships, and spread positive messages.

However, young people must learn to exercise self-control, protect their minds, and remain faithful to their values.

Key message: You were created to influence your generation, not to become a slave to social media.

Bible verse: 1 Timothy 4:12

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

Final Challenge to Gen Z

Ask yourself these three questions:

* Am I controlling my social media use, or is it controlling me?
* Am I using my online influence to build people up or tear them down?
* Is my digital life helping me become the person God wants me to be?

Remember: Your identity is not determined by your followers, your popularity, or the number of likes you receive. Your character, values, and actions matter far more.
