From Wishing to Working
1. INTRODUCTION
Every great invention, every successful business, every First Class student started as a wish. But wishing alone has never built anything.
In Nigeria today, many youths are professional wishers:
"I wish I had capital"
"I wish government will help"
"I wish I can japa"
"I wish I had connection"
But wishing without working is like praying for rain and refusing to plant. Nothing grows.
This project is about moving from the *wish zone* to the *work zone*.
2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Why do many people with big dreams remain poor, jobless, and frustrated?
*Findings:*
- They spend 80% time talking, 20% doing. Successful people do opposite.
- Fear of failure: "What if my rice business fails?"
- Waiting for perfect conditions: Perfect capital, perfect time, perfect government — which never comes.
- Social media illusion: Watching others succeed while just wishing to be like them.
3. AIM AND OBJECTIVES
*Aim:* To show that disciplined work, not wishful thinking, is the bridge between dreams and success.
*Objectives:*
1. To differentiate between wishers and workers
2. To identify why people sit and wish
3. To provide practical steps to work it out
4. To motivate youth for action in agribusiness, education, and personal development
4. CONCEPTUAL CLARIFICATION
- *WISH:* A desire without commitment. It is passive, cheap, and comfortable. "I wish to be rich."
- *WORK IT OUT:* A desire backed with plan, sacrifice, consistency, and execution. "I will sell 20 bags of rice daily for 2 years to become rich."
*Formula:* Wish + Work = Win. Wish - Work = Worry.
5. WHY PEOPLE JUST SIT AND WISH
1. *Procrastination:* "I will start next month"
2. *Excuse Culture:* No capital, no support, village people, government bad
3. *Laziness disguised as prayer:* Praying all day but refusing to apply knowledge
4. *Fear of Mockery:* "What will people say if I start selling garri with my BSc?"
5. *Lack of Direction:* No clear plan, so you wish everything and do nothing
6. HOW TO WORK IT OUT — PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK (4Ps)
*A. PLAN IT OUT*
Don't just wish. Write it down. Your rice mill idea you asked about — write business plan, not just in your head.
- What exactly do you want? (Be specific)
- When? (Set deadline)
*B. PRICE IT OUT*
Every dream has a price — time, money, sleep, friends, comfort. Are you ready to pay?
If you want a rice mill, price is: Learn milling for 3 months, save N5M, visit 10 mills.
*C. PLUG IN*
Start with what you have. Don't wait for N50M. Start with N200k paddy aggregation. Use small profit to grow.
A journey of 1000 miles starts with hawking in your street.
*D. PERSEVERE*
Consistency beats talent. Show up even when sales are low, even when NEPA takes light, even when people laugh.
Most people quit at 90%, just before success.
7. CASE STUDIES (Nigerian Context)
1. *Aliko Dangote:* Did not just wish to be rich. Started by selling sugar at age 20 with loan from uncle.
2. *Farming Example:* Two graduates: One wishes for job, stays in Port Harcourt 3 years jobless. Another starts 1 plot of cucumber farm with N80k, makes N250k in 6 weeks, reinvests.
3. *Student Example:* One wishes for A, sleeps. Another works it out — 4 hours daily reading, past questions. Same exam, different results.
8. IMPLICATIONS FOR OUR PROJECTS (Education & Agribusiness)
- *For Education Flaws we discussed:* Don't just complain about bad system. Work it out — learn skill online, do practicals yourself, teach others.
- *For Your Rice Mill:* Don't just wish for factory. Start with market research in Oil Mill Market tomorrow. Visit one mill in Abakaliki next week. That is working it out.
- *For Economic Gap:* Gap closes not by wishing rich will help poor, but by poor working strategically to create wealth.
9. CONCLUSION
Life does not give you what you wish for, it gives you what you work for.
If you sit down and wish, life will pass you by. If you stand up and work it out, life will make way for you.
Stop waiting for opportunity. Create it. Stop wishing for capital. Start small. Stop explaining your dreams. Execute them.
*Final Charge:*
Close your eyes and wish for 5 minutes. Open them. Nothing changed. Now work for 5 hours. Something will change. That is the difference.
> *"The Almighty will bless the work of your hands, not the wish in your heart."*
