PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE: WHY HEALTH SHOULD NOT ONLY MATTER WHEN WE GET SICK

Post by OnlyRabbi »

Many people pay attention to their health only after something goes wrong. We visit hospitals when we become seriously ill, but we often ignore the habits that may contribute to poor health in the first place.

Health is influenced by many factors, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, hygiene, stress, environment, genetics, and access to healthcare.

Prevention doesn’t mean that every disease can be avoided. Some illnesses occur despite healthy habits. However, many health problems can be reduced or detected earlier through sensible lifestyle choices and appropriate medical care.

For example, regular physical activity can support cardiovascular health and help maintain healthy body weight. Eating a varied diet can provide essential nutrients. Adequate sleep supports physical and mental functioning. Good hygiene can reduce the spread of many infections.

Another important part of prevention is screening and early detection. Some health conditions may not cause obvious symptoms at first, which is why appropriate medical checkups can be valuable.

There is also a major difference between self-care and self-medication. Taking medicine simply because it worked for someone else can be dangerous. The correct treatment depends on the condition, the person’s medical history, allergies, other medicines, and other factors.

Health education therefore shouldn’t only teach people how to treat illness. It should teach people how to make informed decisions before illness becomes severe.
